Consolidation is super important when it comes to saving time in game development. Creating tools for future materials is amazing. Substance Designer is great for generating custom sculpts (height) with endless customization. But if you are wanting to create hand painted textures from photographic sources or just hand brush painted style textures it’s very hard to beat. Both are powerful tools with similar and different abilities. It is more of a texture painter app than a procedural texture creator.

But it’s very fairly and affordably priced and still offers perpetual licensing. I also would highly recommend giving 3D Coat a serious look as well. I would have been looking into it myself but have been too busy. Which these days especially is an important thing to consider. It’s going to be well worth the modest up front development support cost and no recurring rental cost stresses either.
